What's Included in Web Designer Pricing? (And What Usually Isn't)

Getting a quote from a web designer and not knowing what's actually covered is one of the most frustrating parts of the hiring process. One designer quotes $800 and another quotes $2,500 — and you have no idea if they're quoting the same thing.

Here's what should be in a typical web design quote, what's commonly left out, and what questions to ask before you sign anything.

What's Typically Included in a Standard Quote

Design and layout
The visual design of your website — how it looks, how it's structured, where elements sit on the page. This is the core of what a web designer does.

Development / Build
Turning the design into a functioning website. This involves building pages, setting up navigation, making sure everything is connected and works properly.

Mobile responsiveness
Your site should work and look good on every screen size — desktop, tablet, and mobile. Any professional designer should include this as standard. If someone charges extra for mobile optimization in 2024, that's a red flag.

Basic on-page SEO
At a minimum: properly set page titles, meta descriptions, header tag structure, image alt text, and a clean URL structure. This is foundational — your site needs it to have any chance of being found on Google.

Contact form setup
A functional contact or inquiry form connected to your email. Standard for any business site.

SSL certificate setup
That little padlock in the browser bar. It makes your site secure (https://) and is required by Google to avoid ranking penalties. Should be standard.

Basic analytics integration
Connecting Google Analytics (or equivalent) so you can see who's visiting your site. Most professional designers include this.

Testing and quality checks
Before launch, a competent designer checks every page on multiple browsers and devices, confirms all links work, and ensures forms submit correctly.

What's Often NOT Included (But Might Be Expected)

Copywriting
Writing the actual words on your website is frequently a separate service. If you don't provide content, many designers will charge extra for copywriting — or use placeholder text and leave it to you. Clarify this upfront.

Photography and imagery
Custom photography is almost always separate. Stock photos may be included or may require a licensing fee. Ask.

Logo design
If you don't have a logo, creating one is typically a separate project. Some designers offer it as an add-on.

Domain name registration
Your web address (yourcompany.ca) is usually purchased separately through a registrar like GoDaddy or Google Domains. Some agencies include this; most don't.

Hosting
Where your site lives on the internet. Some agencies include hosting as part of a monthly plan; others build your site and hand it over for you to host yourself. Both are legitimate — just make sure you know which model you're in.

Email setup
Setting up professional email addresses (hello@yourcompany.ca) is often separate. Ask if this is something you need.

Ongoing maintenance
Updates, security patches, backups, and content changes after launch are typically not included in a one-time build price. Many agencies offer monthly maintenance plans.

Blog setup and population
A blog section can be included in the build, but writing and publishing blog posts is almost always extra.

E-commerce functionality
Product pages, shopping cart, payment processing, inventory management — if you need to sell online, expect significant additions to the base price.

The Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Get clear answers to these before any money changes hands:

  • "Does your quote include copywriting, or do I need to provide content?"
  • "Is hosting included, or is that separate?"
  • "How many pages are covered in this price?"
  • "How many rounds of revisions are included?"
  • "What happens after launch — is support included?"
  • "What would cause the price to go up from this quote?"

A professional designer will answer all of these directly. Vague answers or "it depends" without further explanation is a signal to push harder — or look elsewhere.
